New Begingings
"The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written."-Melody Beattie
Welcome back to all of our wonderful students and staff! We hope you all had the very happiest of holidays. Lets take the positive learning experiences, fails, setbacks, promising moments and put it all in prospect for new beginnings in 2022. We have exciting opportunities happening here at the Career Center and we are glad to welcome 2022 with open arms!
ALTRUSA
In 1962, ALTRUSA International established the Altrusa International Foundation in which is dedicated to improving economic well-being and quality of life through a commitment to community services and literacy. In 1966, the organization began to look to America's youth as the future of Altrusa and established ASTRA service clubs. ASTRA encourages young people, ages 13 to 21 to participate in community service. Expanding on its commitment to youth, Altrusa adopted literacy as an ongoing area of service in 1977. We would like to celebrate the 2022 ALTRUSA Career Center CTE recipients. Congratulations to Jared Ryan from Culinary Arts and Kellie Lohman from Compact Engines!
What is a CTSO?
All Career Center CTE programs have Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO). The purpose of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) is to enhance student learning through contextual instruction, leadership, personal development , applied learning, and real-world application.
CTSOs work as an integral component of the classroom curriculum and instruction, building upon employability and career skills and concepts through the application and engagement of students in hand-on demonstrations and real-life and/or work experiences through a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. CTSO'S helps guide students in developing a career path, a program of study and provide opportunities in gaining the skills and abilities needed to be successful in those careers through CTSO activities, programs, and competitive events. In addition, students have opportunities to hold leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels as well as getting to attend leadership development conferences to network with other students as well as business and industry partners.
The Career Center Healthcare Program will be participating in the 2022 HOSA CTSO Leadership Conference this February. Wish them " GOOD" luck!
As always the Career Center strives to deliver the best student-centered hands-on education in the Grand Valley. We pride ourselves in being the "Home of the D51 Rockstars" and encourage you to join us in celebrating the goodness of your student and the greatness that lays ahead!
Staying Healthy Taking Care of Yourself
Culinary Arts
We are also celebrating our top customer for the school year of 2021: Wes Pidcock, Horticulture Teacher. Thanks to Wes' for strong and continued support, for giving great feedback and encouragement to students. He has even shared his Barista skills and taught some culinary students how to make an amazing latte! Mr. P, you are helping Fresh Side Café in many skills!
Culinary Arts is also celebrating a huge accomplishment in the "Hotshot" program for last semester. the quality of food service and caliber of work that D51 school kitchens require could not have been possible without he help of he twelve Culinary Arts students who went into the other school cafeterias for food service internships. This was a pilot program that proves the incredible ability of a community to rally when there is a need. Career Center students in, and stepped up to the challenge of feeding literally hundreds if not thousands of other students daily for 4 weeks! Way to go Culinary students way to go above and beyond and help your fellow students and your community!

Early Childcare
Our classroom CTSO's are preparing "Gratitude Notes' for some in the early childhood community as we;;a son our own building. It is a great way to improve classroom/community kindness. We are proud of the students who want to remind people how much they are needed during this stressful time in our history. Ms. Deb is very proud of the students who are working so hard to do this!
